Common questions about parts and maintenance

Yes. Like most appliances, air conditioners need regular maintenance to run efficiently and smoothly. A service cleans out the unit and checks that every part is working properly. The best time to book one is before the season changes, so your system is ready before summer.

A home air conditioner should be serviced by a professional every 12 months to head off short and long term problems and keep it running at its best. If you want to be extra careful, a service every six months is an option. You can book a service online.

Evaporative coolers need their water distribution kept clean so the pads don't dry out. Newer coolers drain themselves but still need flushing from time to time, and the pads need replacing once they start to rot. Refrigerated air conditioners need their return air filters cleaned, especially in a dusty house, or the unit can ice up and stop working. The inside of the unit should be wiped down regularly, and the outdoor condenser kept free of dust with nothing blocking its airflow.

A fan draws warm air into the unit and through wet, absorbent pads. As the water in the pads evaporates it takes heat out of the air, and the cooled air is then sent through the house by ducts and vents. Evaporative cooling works best in hot, dry weather and needs a reliable water supply.

Not by converting the system you have. Evaporative and refrigerated cooling use different technology and different duct sizes, so the evaporative system is replaced rather than changed. Swapping one system for the other is a simple job though, and can usually be done in a matter of hours.

A qualified refrigeration mechanic. Most systems fail because of poor installation rather than a faulty unit. Ask your installer about the materials and systems they use, and make sure they can service and repair the system afterwards. Split system installers must be licensed by the Australian Refrigeration Council, and whoever does the wiring needs at least a restricted electrical licence.
