Solar power often seems complicated, and you may be unsure about what products or system would suit you best. The experienced solar team at Mouritz will explain the options and clearly demonstrate the benefits that can be achieved from installing a solar power solution.

By harnessing the free energy from the sun one of the main benefits will be a significant reduction on your power bills with savings of up to 50%. Perth is fortunate to experience clear, sunny days almost year-round, and with over eight hours of sunlight most days, our climate is ideal for solar power.

Solar power is extremely eco-friendly with no harmful emissions using a renewable energy source.

By installing solar panels, not only will you be saving money you can take advantage of government rebates that are widely available reducing the initial investment. Additionally, the cost of solar panels and battery storage is now more affordable in Western Australia than in many other parts of the world.

In contrast, households without solar face high ever-increasing electricity costs each year.

How do solar power systems work?

Put simply a solar system converts the suns energy into electrical power, which is used within your home, added back to the power grid or stored in batteries located on your property.

1

Collecting free energy from the sun

Solar panels convert sunlight into a direct electrical current (DC) using photovoltaic cells. The panels are located on your roof and positioned on the best sections to collect as much sunlight as possible. At this stage the current generated by the panels is not usable within your home, and it needs to be converted to an alternating current (AC)

2

Converting to useable power for your home

An inverter is included in the system which converts the direct current into an alternating current at 240 volts. You now have power that is usable within you home to run appliances including your air conditioning system. Any power that is not used can be introduced back into the power grid through a metred system. You then receive a credit on your electricity bill from your service provider.

3

Free power when you need it

It’s also possible to include battery storage or an EV charging station to your solar solution from Mouritz. The addition of battery storage means that stored power is available for use within your home delivering even greater savings on your power bill and reduces your exposure to rising energy costs. The system can also be set up to provide a partial back up for your home should there be a power cut. Adding an EV charging station is another option should you have an electric vehicle.

Step 1

Inspection

The first step in our process is to inspect your site to determine the best positioning for your new solar system and in particular the location for the solar panels to go on the roof. This ensures you get the most out of your solar energy package.

Step 2

Getting ready for the solar panels

A tailored framework is created for the solar panels incorporating custom brackets and fixings to ensure there is no risk of subsequent water leaks into your home.

Step 3

Installing the panels

Once the framework is in place we mount the solar panels and begin the process of adding the cabling that will connect to the rest of the system.

Step 4

Connection

The final step is to connect the inverter, activate, and fully test the system. This includes adding your connection to the power grid and testing any additional equipment such as battery storage or EV charging.

Common questions

Common questions about solar

The price depends on the size and quality of the system, but every eligible Perth install is helped by the federal small scale technology certificate rebate. It comes straight off your quoted price rather than being claimed back later, and on a common 6.6 kW system it is usually worth a couple of thousand dollars. Worth knowing is that this rebate steps down a little each year as the scheme winds up by 2030, so the subsidy is slightly smaller the longer you leave it. Mouritz quotes a fixed price with the rebate already applied, so you see the real out of pocket cost from the start.

The largest savings come from using your own solar during the day instead of buying power from the grid. Any excess you send back is paid through Synergy's Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme, currently 10 cents per unit for electricity exported between 3pm and 9pm and 2 cents at other times. Because you earn less for exporting than you pay to buy, the smart approach is to run bigger loads like the pool pump, dishwasher, washing and air conditioning while the sun is up. Most Perth homes cover a solid share of their yearly electricity this way, and adding a battery lifts it further.

It comes down to how much electricity you use and when you use it. A bigger system produces more, but there is little value in paying for power you export cheaply rather than use yourself. As a rough guide a 6.6 kW system suits many Perth homes, while households with a pool, ducted air conditioning, an electric vehicle or a battery often benefit from going larger. The most reliable way to size it is to look at a recent Synergy bill alongside your available roof space. Mouritz reviews both before recommending a size, so you are not paying for output you will not use.

Most Perth roofs suit solar well, and the direction of the panels does make a difference. North facing panels produce the most across a full day. West facing panels generate more in the late afternoon, which lines up with both the higher buyback rate and typical evening use. East facing panels help in the mornings. The main thing to manage is shading from trees, aerials or a neighbouring wall, although panel level electronics can reduce its effect. Mouritz checks your roof orientation, pitch and any shading as part of preparing your quote.

A battery stores your daytime solar so you can use it at night rather than buying from the grid, which makes good sense given Perth's low daytime buyback rate. Batteries are far more affordable now thanks to two rebates that can be combined. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries program takes roughly 30 percent off the cost of a typical battery, and the WA Residential Battery Scheme adds a state rebate on top, around $1,300 for Synergy customers. Joining a virtual power plant is generally required to receive the state rebate. Whether a battery pays for itself depends on your usage and budget, and Mouritz can model it for your home before you decide.

A standard home system is usually installed in a single day by Mouritz's licensed electricians and accredited installers, with larger or battery jobs sometimes taking a little longer. We handle the paperwork first, including the connection application with Western Power and Synergy. Good quality panels generally carry a product warranty of 12 to 15 years and a performance warranty of about 25 years, while inverters are commonly warranted for 5 to 10 years. Mouritz backs the whole job with local aftercare, so if anything ever needs attention you are dealing with a Perth team rather than an interstate call centre.
