Many air conditioning technicians recommend that you change your air filter every 1-3 months. Most people think that this is necessary to clean their air and this is partly true. However, the air filters primary function is to protect your entire air conditioning system from external sources of potential damage. It’s essential that you choose the correct air filter to suit your air conditioning systems, let’s examine this in more detail.
Your Air Filter is Your First Line of Defense:
The modern air filter can provide a wide variety of assistance to offer a better quality of air. Many filters can effectively reduce the level of allergens making the air more pleasant to breathe. However, the main function of the air filter will always be the first line of defense against damage from outside the home. Our air conditioners suck air into the system to treat it and then distribute it throughout the home. This external air can be loaded with particles of dirt and dust that will then be sucked into your AC system. These particles can easily cause damage to the components in your system if they are not blocked. The air filter will block most of these particles, but over time the air filter will become clogged with dirt.
Changing or Cleaning the Air Filter:
It’s essential to clean or change the air filter in your AC system regularly to protect your system’s components. It’s also important that the flow of air is maintained to efficiently move the treated air throughout your home. If you’re not sure how to change your air filter or which air filter you need to buy check your manual. The air filter should ideally be changed monthly, but if you have pets, it may be necessary to change it more often. Pet dander can quickly block a filter, and many pet owners change their air filter on a fortnightly or even weekly basis. Always get the correct air filter, a poorly fitted filter will allow the air to pass around it and provide no protection for your system.
Do You Need to Upgrade Your Air Filter?
A dirty air filter can impede the airflow in your home, and a similar result occurs if you use an air filter that is the wrong rating. If the fibres in your filter are woven too tightly, they can prevent the air from moving into your HVAC system. Every air filter has a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) that indicates how well it filters the air. A typical home AC system would have a rating of 1-4 MERV. However, that AC system could be fitted with an air filter with a MERV rating up to 8. Increasing the MERV rating can be a good idea, but if you fit an air filter that’s too strong, it can also damage your air conditioner. If you want to improve the quality of your air, it may be a better idea to install an air purifier instead.
