Where Can I Install Solar Panels?

With Perth’s naturally sunny climate, installing solar panels is a no-brainer. You can cut your electricity bills, while doing your bit for the environment. And Perth residents may also be eligible for government rebates to make it even more attractive. And with solar panels becoming more affordable, going solar is a logical decision. The only question you need to ask is – when and where to install your solar panels?

How are solar panels installed?

Our first stage is to inspect your home to determine where the solar panels can be installed. We will then obtain any necessary permits from your local council.

We will examine the site so that we can pinpoint exactly which part of your home will receive maximum sun exposure and where best to position your panels. We will also identify any potential hazards, so we can avoid them.

The next stage is fixing the brackets and racking to your roof before attaching the PV solar panels using extruded aluminium clamps. The panels are then connected together with cables.

The final stage is to connect the panels to the inverter, and then onto to the grid. We will then thoroughly test your system to make sure every component is functioning correctly and you’re getting your free energy directly from the sun. At Mouritz, we’re backed by 45 years of helping local Perth residents find solutions to their home needs, and we understand the importance of preparation and doing a thorough job.

Can a tenant install solar panels?

A tenant in Western Australia can install solar panels, but they must get their landlord’s permission to do so before they install them. Installing solar panels is a good idea for a tenant, as they could substantially reduce your power bills. But it is an investment, so you need to make sure you see a long-term future renting that property.

If this is you, there are no hard and fast rules about installing solar panels on a rental property. We would advise that you do your research (you might need permission from strata as well as your landlord). It also makes sense to get whatever agreement you and your landlord come to in writing to protect you further down the track.

Can I install solar panels on my balcony?

Whether or not you can install solar panels on your balcony will depend on the balcony structure and load capacity. You will also need to check the local building codes, and regulations. You may also need to seek permission from the building owner, if you live in an apartment, rather than a house.

Balcony solar panels are typically lighter and smaller than the solar panels that go on your roof, but you will still need a licensed electrician or installer to make sure that your panels comply with safety standards. Don’t forget to consider the aesthetics of the balcony; there may be colour or mounting options that will make your solar panels more aesthetically pleasing.

Can I install solar panels on my roof?

Yes, you can install solar panels on your roof. The type of roof that you have will determine how many panels you can install and in what configuration. This is why the first part of our installation process is a comprehensive inspection, so we can assess your roof and work out what makes the most sense.

Flat roofs

Solar panels can be installed on flat roofs, but they may require special mounting systems to make sure the panels are positioned and secured properly. A roof with a steeper pitch might provide better airflow, which reduces the chance of the panels overheating.

Tile roofs

Solar panels can be installed on tile roofs, but again they will require more planning and perhaps additional mounting. It’s essential to make sure that both the roof tiles and the panels are securely attached to the roof. Similarly, shingle roofs may need reinforcement to bear the weight of the panels.

Outbuilding & Shed roofs

Solar panels can be installed on a shed roof, provided it is structurally sound, and positioned well enough for exposure to the sunshine. South-facing roofs generally receive the most sunlight, although west and east-facing may also get adequate amounts of sun exposure too.

Can solar panels be installed on the ground?

Solar panels can be installed on the ground, as long as there is enough access to open space and the all-important sunlight. The advantage of ground-mounted solar panels is that they can be placed in direct sunlight, rather than being restricted by overlook from trees or other houses. Their accessibility makes them easier to maintain and look after and they can be tilted and positioned for optimal sunlight exposure.
